The Annunciation -- the moment the archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God -- is the pivot point of Christian history. This magnificent HD wallpaper renders the scene in the tradition of the great Renaissance masters: Fra Angelico, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, each of whom created defining versions of this sacred moment. Gabriel arrives in white robes with golden wings, holding the white lily of purity, his bearing a combination of the divine ambassador's gravity and tender reverence for the young woman before him. Mary looks up from her reading in genuine surprise -- not theatrical shock but the real startlement of someone whose ordinary afternoon has been interrupted by the transcendent. The beam of divine light from the upper left traces the path of the Holy Spirit's coming, as the angel announces: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you."
