Forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus led his disciples to the Mount of Olives outside Jerusalem, spoke his final words to them, and was taken up into heaven before their eyes -- a cloud received him out of their sight. This dramatic HD wallpaper renders the Ascension in the classical Baroque tradition, with the strong vertical composition that the event demands: Jesus ascending in radiant white robes, arms outstretched as if embracing the world he is leaving and the heaven he is entering, the disciples below on the Mount of Olives looking upward in awe, some kneeling, some shielding their eyes from the divine light that accompanies his departure. The brilliant light from above breaks through the clouds in shafts of golden radiance; the dark earth below captures the strange mixture of grief and joy that marked the disciples' response to the Ascension. Acts 1:11 records the angels' words to the disciples: "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." The disciples returned to Jerusalem to await the Holy Spirit as Jesus had promised. The Ascension of the Lord is celebrated forty days after Easter (Ascension Thursday) and marks the completion of Jesus's earthly mission. In Christian theology the Ascension signifies Christ's glorification in his human nature, his intercession at the right hand of the Father, and the preparation of a place for all who follow him.
