About this image
An adorable and beloved scene from Hanuman's childhood — the infant Hanuman leaping into the sky to catch the rising sun, mistaking it for a ripe golden mango. Born with extraordinary divine powers, baby Hanuman's mother Anjana left him sleeping one morning while she went to gather food. The hungry infant saw the brilliant golden sun rising and, thinking it was a delicious fruit, launched himself into the sky with incredible speed. He flew higher and higher, reaching toward the blazing sun with his tiny hand, his curly monkey tail trailing behind. According to the Puranas, this act alarmed Indra, king of the gods, who struck young Hanuman with his thunderbolt (vajra), hitting his jaw (hanu) — giving him his name Hanuman ("one with a broken jaw"). The Sun God Surya was so impressed by the child's courage that he later became Hanuman's guru. This painting captures the innocence and wonder of the moment — a divine child whose playful curiosity knew no bounds.
