The Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan marks the formal beginning of his public ministry and one of the most theologically significant moments in all of Scripture -- the only event where all three persons of the Trinity are simultaneously present and identified. This luminous HD wallpaper renders the scene in classical style: Jesus standing waist-deep in the flowing Jordan River, John the Baptist beside him pouring water over his head, and above them both the white dove of the Holy Spirit descending in a shaft of divine light from the opened heaven. The Gospel accounts record the voice from heaven saying: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." John the Baptist himself, who had preached "One mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie," initially refused to baptize Jesus: "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied that it must be done "to fulfill all righteousness" -- his baptism was an act of solidarity with humanity, the sinless one entering the waters of repentance on behalf of all. The Jordan River has been a pilgrimage site since at least the 4th century. The traditional site, Qasr al-Yahud in the West Bank, is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually who renew their own baptismal vows in its waters. The baptism of Jesus is celebrated as the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in Catholic and Protestant traditions, and as Theophany in the Eastern Orthodox Church, where the blessing of water remains central to the celebration.
