About this image
Christ Pantocrator -- "The Ruler of All" -- is the supreme title given to Jesus Christ in Eastern Orthodox Christian theology, and this breathtaking Byzantine icon captures the full majesty and mystery of that title. Jesus is depicted in the ancient frontal pose of sacred Byzantine art: face turned slightly, large solemn dark eyes holding both compassion and divine authority, dark hair and beard following the iconographic tradition established in the earliest Christian art. In His left hand He holds the Gospel book -- the Word of God made visible, bound and present. His right hand is raised in the sign of blessing: the three extended fingers representing the Trinity, the two bent fingers representing the two natures of Christ (divine and human). The gold leaf background is not decorative but theological: gold in Byzantine iconography represents divine light, uncreated and eternal -- the same light that shone at the Transfiguration and will illuminate the New Jerusalem. The ornate halo bears the Greek letters IC XC (Jesus Christ) and the Omega symbol -- "I Am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last." This icon type traces back to at least the 6th century CE -- some of the oldest surviving Christian images from Sinai monastery follow this exact form. In Orthodox tradition, icons are not mere pictures but "windows into heaven" -- Christ is truly present in the image, and to gaze upon it is to be seen in return.
