Aadi Perukku is a Tamil Nadu water festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi (July-August), honoring the life-giving rivers and water bodies of the region. The festival coincides with the rise in water levels of rivers like Kaveri, Vaigai, and Tamiraparani due to monsoon rains and water released from dams for irrigation. Devotثees gather at riverbanks, lakes, and temple tanks to offer prayers, food, and flowers to the water. Women prepare special offerings including sweet pongal, coconut rice, and lemon rice, which they share with family by the riverside. In Thanjavur and the Kaveri delta region, the celebrations are especially grand as agriculture depends on the river.
