Ambubachi Mela is one of the largest tantric gatherings in India, held annually at the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam. The four-day festival, usually in late June, marks the annual menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya. According to tradition, the presiding goddess undergoes her annual cycle of menstruation during the monsoon season, and the temple remains closed for three days. The Brahmaputra River near the temple is said to turn red during this period. On the fourth day, the temple reopens and devotees receive a piece of angodak (red cloth) and angarag (red-colored prasad) as sacred blessings. The festival attracts tantric practitioners, sadhus, and devotees from across India, particularly from Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and other eastern states. It celebrates feminine creative power (shakti) and challenges taboos around menstruation. Tens of thousands of pilgrims camp around the temple during the festival. Kamakhya is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in Hindu tradition.
