Basant Panchami, also known as Vasant Panchami, celebrates the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. Observed on the fifth day of the Hindu month Magha, the festival is celebrated across North India, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam. People wear yellow clothing symbolizing the mustard fields in bloom, and offer yellow flowers and sweets to Saraswati. Educational institutions organize special pujas where books, instruments, and pens are placed before the goddess for blessings. In West Bengal, elaborate Saraswati idols are installed in homes and pandals, followed by immersion the next day. In Punjab, kite flying is a popular tradition. The festival marks the preparation period for Holi, which follows forty days later. It is considered an auspicious day to begin new educational pursuits.
