Chitra Pournami is the full moon day of the Tamil month of Chithirai and is considered highly auspicious in South Indian Hindu tradition. The festival is celebrated with special fervor at the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple in Tamil Nadu and at Madurai Meenakshi Temple. According to legend, this is the night when Lord Shiva danced in the golden hall of Chidambaram, and devotees gather to witness special abhishekam ceremonies. The full moon of Chithirai is believed to be the brightest and most powerful of the year. In many temples across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, special puja and processions are held through the night. Devotees fast during the day and break their fast after sighting the full moon. At Tiruvannamalai, devotees perform girivalam (circumambulation) of the Arunachala hill under the full moonlight.
