Ganga Dussehra Wallpapers
Ganga Dussehra celebrates the descent of the holy river Ganga from heaven to earth, observed on the tenth day of the bright half of the month Jyeshtha. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance to bring Ganga down to earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva caught the mighty river in his locks to break her fall. The festival is celebrated with great devotion in cities along the Ganges, particularly in Varanasi, Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Rishikesh, Garh Mukteshwar, and Patna. Devotees take ritual baths in the Ganges, believing that a dip on this day washes away ten sins (hence dussehra, meaning ten). Grand evening aartis with thousands of oil lamps are performed on the ghats. The festival holds special significance in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and West Bengal, where the Ganges is revered as a living goddess and mother figure.
