Kali Puja, also known as Shyama Puja, is celebrated on the new moon night of the Hindu month of Kartik, coinciding with the night of Diwali. While much of India celebrates Diwali with Lakshmi Puja, West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and parts of Bihar worship Goddess Kali on this night. Elaborate Kali idols depicting the fierce goddess standing on Lord Shiva are installed in pandals across Kolkata and other Bengali cities. The goddess is shown with a garland of skulls, protruding tongue, and multiple arms holding weapons. The puja is performed at midnight, the most auspicious time for Kali worship. Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Dakshineswar Kali Temple, and Tarapith are the most important centers of worship. The tantric tradition of Kali worship involves elaborate rituals performed by specialized priests. Many devotees stay awake all night in prayer. The festival reflects the unique Bengali Hindu tradition where the fierce mother goddess is worshipped as a loving mother. In recent years, themed Kali Puja pandals in Kolkata have become tourist attractions alongside Durga Puja pandals.
