Makaravilakku is the culminating festival of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season in Kerala, observed on Makar Sankranti (January 14-15). The highlight is the appearance of the Makara Jyothi, a celestial light seen on the Ponnambalamedu hill, which devotees believe is a divine manifestation. The Thiruvabharanam (sacred ornaments of Lord Ayyappa) is brought in a ceremonial procession from Pandalam Palace to Sabarimala, a tradition commemorating the journey of the prince-deity. Millions of devotees who have completed the 41-day vratham (penance) gather at the temple to witness the deeparadhana (lamp worship) ceremony and the Makara Jyothi. The temple sanctum sanctorum is especially decorated, and the Ayyappa idol is adorned with the sacred ornaments. The festival marks the Uttarayana (northward movement of the sun) and is considered the most auspicious time for darshan at Sabarimala. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh contribute the largest number of pilgrims. The pilgrimage and festival represent one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world.
