The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, also known as the Snake Boat Race, is held on the second Saturday of August on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kerala, and is closely associated with the Onam festivities. The race features chundan vallams (snake boats), massive boats over 100 feet long, each paddled by over 100 rowers in perfect synchronization while singers maintain rhythm with traditional Vanchipattu (boat songs). The race was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, who was so captivated by the boat races during his 1952 visit that he donated a silver trophy. The spectacular event attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators who line the lakeshore and fill temporary galleries. The boats represent different villages and are maintained as objects of communal pride. Other famous boat races include the Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallamkali and the Payippad Jalotsavam. The boat race tradition dates back to the 13th century during the Chempakassery kingdom. The races have become an iconic symbol of Kerala culture and a major tourist attraction during the monsoon season.
