Nongkrem Dance Festival Wallpapers
The Nongkrem Dance Festival is the most important religious festival of the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, held annually at Smit village (about 11 km from Shillong), the seat of the Khasi Syiem (chief) of Hima Khyrim. The five-day festival is a thanksgiving ceremony to Ka Blei Synshar (the goddess who is the guardian of the Khasi people) for a bountiful harvest and to seek blessings for peace and prosperity. The festival features elaborate traditional dances performed by young men and women. The male dancers wield swords and whisks made of yak hair, performing energetic movements, while female dancers move gracefully in slow circular patterns wearing traditional jainsem (Khasi attire) with gold and silver jewelry and elaborate crowns. Goat sacrifices are offered during the rituals. The Syiem (chief) plays a central role in the ceremonies, which preserve the ancient Khasi religious practices predating Christianity (which the majority of Khasis now follow). The festival provides a rare window into the indigenous Khasi belief system and matrilineal traditions.
