Nuakhai Wallpapers

Nuakhai is the most important agrarian festival of Western Odisha, celebrated a day after Ganesh Chaturthi. The name means new food (nua meaning new, khai meaning food/eating), and it marks the occasion when newly harvested rice is first offered to the presiding deity before being consumed by the community. The festival is predominantly celebrated in the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh. Families gather at their ancestral homes, and the eldest member of the household serves the new rice to all family members in order of seniority (Nuakhai Bhet Ghat). Traditional Sambalpuri dance and music, including Dalkhai and Rasarkeli, are performed. Each temple and region has its own specific muhurat for the first eating of new grain. The festival reinforces family bonds and agrarian identity, with many comparing its cultural importance in Western Odisha to that of Durga Puja in West Bengal.
