Sharad Purnima, also known as Kojagiri Purnima, falls on the full moon night of the Hindu month Ashvin and is considered the brightest full moon of the year. It celebrates the divine Raas Leela of Lord Krishna with the gopis of Vrindavan under the autumn moonlight. In Mathura, Vrindavan, and across Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, devotees stay awake all night offering prayers to Krishna and Radha. A special preparation of kheer (rice pudding) is left under the moonlight overnight, believed to absorb the healing rays of the moon. In Gujarat, this night is celebrated as the conclusion of the Navratri-Garba season. In West Bengal, it is observed as Lakshmi Puja, the most important Lakshmi worship of the year. In Maharashtra, the Kojagiri celebration involves drinking cold milk flavored with saffron under the open sky. The festival is significant for its belief that the moon has special healing and nourishing properties on this specific night.
