About this image
A grand Gothic cathedral interior bathed in golden sunlight streaming through massive stained glass windows. Soaring ribbed vaulted ceilings draw the eye upward toward heaven, while beams of colored light dance across the polished stone floor between rows of dark wooden pews. The symmetrical perspective down the central aisle leads the eye toward a distant glowing altar. Gothic architecture, developed in 12th-century France, was designed specifically to maximize the amount of light entering a building -- the pointed arches, flying buttresses, and thin stone walls allowed for enormous windows that transformed stone buildings into vessels of divine light. The greatest examples -- Chartres, Notre-Dame, Cologne, Canterbury -- have inspired awe for nearly a thousand years. Every element serves both structural and theological purposes: the ribbed vaults represent the vault of heaven, the tall columns recall the trees of paradise, and the light itself symbolizes the presence of God.
