One of the most dramatic episodes in the Ramayana — Hanuman sets the golden city of Lanka ablaze with his burning tail. After delivering Rama's message to Sita in the Ashoka Vatika, Hanuman was captured by Ravana's forces and brought to the demon king's court. As punishment, Ravana ordered Hanuman's tail to be wrapped in oil-soaked cloth and set on fire. But Hanuman, with his divine powers, expanded his tail to enormous length, broke free from his captors, and leapt across the rooftops of Lanka, dragging his flaming tail across palace after palace, marketplace after marketplace. The golden city erupted in an inferno. In this stunning night scene, Hanuman is captured mid-leap over the burning cityscape, his muscular body silhouetted against walls of flame. The fire reflects off the water surrounding the island fortress. Only Sita's Ashoka Vatika was spared from the flames — protected by the divine prayer she offered for Hanuman's safety. This act was Hanuman's warning to Ravana: return Sita, or face total destruction.
