About this image

A tender and emotionally charged scene from the Sundara Kanda (the most beautiful chapter of the Ramayana) — Hanuman, in his small form, presents Lord Rama's signet ring to Sita in the moonlit Ashoka Vatika of Lanka. After crossing the ocean to find Sita, Hanuman discovered her imprisoned in Ravana's garden, guarded by fierce Rakshasis (demonesses), sitting forlornly beneath an Ashoka tree. To gain her trust without alarming the guards, Hanuman took a diminutive form and approached gently. He placed Rama's ring before Sita — proof that her beloved husband had sent a messenger and that rescue was coming. Sita, who had been on the verge of ending her life from despair, was flooded with hope. She touched the ring to her eyes and wept tears of joy. In this exquisite painting, rendered in the style of classical Indian miniature art, the moonlight bathes the garden in silver and gold. Sita sits gracefully under the Ashoka tree while little Hanuman kneels before her with folded hands, the ring extended. It is one of the Ramayana's most intimate and hopeful moments.
