Hands resting on the open Word, the day not yet fully begun, the steam rising from the cup like incense -- this is the Thursday morning posture of someone who knows where their sufficiency comes from. 2 Corinthians 12:9 is one of the most personally costly verses in Paul's entire writing: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Paul received this word after pleading three times for a painful "thorn in the flesh" to be removed. God's answer was not removal but grace: I will not take away your weakness, but I will be more than enough for you in it. Thursday is often a day of accumulated weariness. By Thursday, most people have used up their Monday energy reserves and their Tuesday resolve. The week has cost something. And into that cost, this promise speaks with perfect precision: My grace is sufficient. Not "will be sufficient" or "might be sufficient" -- IS. Right now. For whatever this Thursday is holding. Sufficient means exactly enough -- not overwhelming abundance and not barely getting by, but exactly the precise measure of grace required for what this day requires.
