These mountains have stood for millions of years, unchanged by seasons, unmoved by storms. This HD wallpaper anchors Isaiah 26:4 in the most literal visual possible: "Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal." The word "eternal" (olam) in Hebrew does not just mean "lasting a long time." It means beyond time altogether -- a duration that has no beginning and no end. When Isaiah calls God the "Rock eternal," he is not comparing God to something durable. He is declaring God to be the category against which all durability is measured. Mountains erode. Cliffs crumble. Even granite eventually yields to wind and water over geological ages. But the Rock eternal -- the Lord himself -- does not wear down. The doubled emphasis in this verse is often lost in translation: "the Lord, the Lord himself." In Hebrew, this is "Yah YHWH" -- two names of God combined for emphasis. It is as if Isaiah is saying: in case you were confused about which lord I mean, I mean THE Lord. The one who holds His own name. The one who simply IS. Trusting in that Rock is not a gamble.
