About this image
It was the night before his death, and Jesus knelt on the floor and washed his disciples' feet. This profound act of humble service -- recorded only in the Gospel of John (13:1-17) -- remains one of the most powerful and counter-cultural moments in all of Scripture. This classical HD wallpaper renders the scene with the intimacy it deserves: Jesus kneeling before Peter, the basin of water at his side, the towel around his waist, his hands holding the feet of the man who would deny him three times before morning. Peter's initial refusal -- "You shall never wash my feet!" -- and Jesus's response -- "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me" -- captures the entire dynamic of grace: we receive what we cannot earn, or we receive nothing. Around the room, the other disciples watch with varying degrees of comprehension. The warm lamplight of the upper room creates the intimate atmosphere of a meal that was also a last will and testament. Foot washing in the ancient Near East was performed by the lowest-ranking servant of the household, or by a devoted disciple for their teacher. The disciples of Jewish rabbis of the period were not expected to wash their teacher's feet -- this was beneath even their duty. Jesus inverted the entire hierarchy. After washing their feet he said: "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." Maundy Thursday services in Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestant churches still include the Washing of Feet, performed by the priest or pastor on twelve members of the congregation.
