Lord Mahavira (599-527 BCE) was the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism -- the great teacher who revived and organized the ancient Jain tradition into the religion practiced today by over 5 million people worldwide. Born as Prince Vardhamana in Bihar, he renounced royal life at age 30 and practiced intense asceticism for twelve years before achieving Kevala Jnana (omniscience). His five great vows -- non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-attachment -- form the ethical foundation of Jain life. Mahavira is typically depicted in deep meditation, seated in the lotus position, without clothing (in the Digambara tradition) or in simple white cloth (Svetambara tradition).
