Green is the sacred color of Islam -- associated with paradise (jannah), with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was known to have loved green, and with life and growth in the natural world. The combination of gold and green in Islamic art has a lineage going back to the earliest Islamic palace and mosque decoration, from the mosaics of the Dome of the Rock (completed 691 CE) to the tiles of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina.
