About this image
The great Mughal mosques of the Indian subcontinent represent a unique fusion of Central Asian Islamic architecture with indigenous Indian building traditions -- and this HD wallpaper captures their distinctive grandeur: red sandstone with white marble inlay, three great domes with fluted profiles, and a vast open courtyard that can hold tens of thousands of worshippers. This is the aesthetic of the Jama Masjid of Delhi (completed 1656, built by Emperor Shah Jahan, the same emperor who built the Taj Mahal), the Badshahi Mosque of Lahore (completed 1673, built by Emperor Aurangzeb), and the Moti Masjid of Agra -- among the largest mosques on earth. The combination of red sandstone (laterite) and white marble was the signature Mughal palette, developed at Fatehpur Sikri under Akbar and perfected under Shah Jahan. The red provides warmth and grounding; the white marble provides luminosity and the sense of divine transcendence. The inlay work (parchin kari) in marble -- flowers, geometric patterns, calligraphic verses -- reached its zenith in these structures. The Mughal Empire at its height (1526-1707) was the most powerful empire on earth by GDP, and its mosques reflect that imperial confidence: massive in scale, magnificent in materials, yet designed with a courtly refinement that never sacrifices beauty for mere size. The Jama Masjid of Delhi remains India's largest mosque, still in daily use after nearly 400 years. Free HD download.
