About this image
A hauntingly beautiful devotional still life capturing the most powerful symbols of Christ's Passion — three heavy iron crucifixion nails crossed on weathered dark wood, with the woven crown of thorns resting above them and a piece of white linen cloth draped alongside. The dramatic side-lighting creates deep shadows that emphasize the brutal reality of these instruments of suffering while simultaneously transforming them into objects of sacred beauty. Each nail, hand-forged and pitted with age, was driven through flesh and wood on Calvary. The crown of thorns, woven from the sharp branches of the Ziziphus spina-christi (Christ's thorn), was pressed onto Jesus's head by Roman soldiers who mocked him as "King of the Jews." The white linen evokes the burial cloth in which Joseph of Arimathea wrapped Christ's body. Together, these three elements tell the entire Good Friday story — suffering (thorns), sacrifice (nails), and burial (linen) — leading to the empty tomb of Easter morning. This photographic still life is perfect for contemplative prayer and Lenten meditation.
