About this image
Fifty days after Easter, ten days after the Ascension, the apostles and Mary were gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem when the sound of a mighty rushing wind filled the house, and tongues of fire appeared over each of their heads. The Holy Spirit had come. This magnificent HD wallpaper depicts the Pentecost in the grand Baroque tradition -- the upper room filled with supernatural light and movement, the wind catching garments and hair, the apostles responding with wonder and awe as the tongues of fire settle individually on each person. The Virgin Mary, traditionally depicted at the center of the group, receives the Spirit in a posture of prayer. Acts of the Apostles (chapter 2) records what happened next: the disciples poured out into the streets speaking in foreign languages they had not known, which pilgrims from across the Roman world understood each in their own language. Peter preached his first sermon, and three thousand people were baptized that day. Pentecost is thus called the "birthday of the Church." The feast of Pentecost (also called Whit Sunday in English tradition) falls fifty days after Easter and is one of the three principal feasts of the Christian liturgical year, alongside Christmas and Easter. The word "Pentecost" comes from the Greek pentekostos, "fiftieth." In Jewish tradition Pentecost (Shavuot) had commemorated the giving of the Torah at Sinai -- the first covenant. Now the Holy Spirit was given as the new law written not on tablets of stone but on human hearts. The symbol of fire for the Holy Spirit persists through Christian art and hymnody: "Come, Holy Ghost, our hearts inspire, and lighten with celestial fire." Free HD download.
