Psalm 23 is the most beloved psalm in all of Scripture, and this atmospheric vertical wallpaper gives it a visual setting of breathtaking beauty: a solitary wooden cross standing on a rocky shoreline as the sun rises over a calm sea, the golden and blue tones of dawn filling the sky with the colors of hope and peace. The cross silhouette against the sunrise is one of the most enduring images of Christian devotion -- combining the instrument of redemption with the daily miracle of light returning after darkness, a visual theology of resurrection. Psalm 23 was composed by King David, writing from his own experience as a shepherd boy on the hills of Judea before he became king. Every image in the psalm is drawn from pastoral life he had personally lived: the green pastures where flocks rest, the still waters that sheep need (they will not drink from rushing water), the paths through dark valleys, the rod and staff carried by every shepherd. But David uses all these literal images as windows into the nature of God's relationship with the human soul. The Lord is my shepherd -- personal, present, actively guiding. The psalm moves from protection (verses 1-4) to welcome at the table of blessing (verse 5) to the final great statement of trust: "surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
