"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalm 46:10 is perhaps the most countercultural verse in all of Scripture. In a world that prizes productivity, hustle, noise, and constant motion, God calls His people to something radical: stillness. The original Hebrew word for "be still" is raphah, which means to let drop, to relax, to release. It is the act of loosening your grip -- on your worries, your plans, your need to control. Psalm 46 was written in the context of complete upheaval: "the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the sea." Yet the Psalmist's response is not panic but presence -- "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." The command to "be still" comes at the climax of the Psalm as God's answer to all the chaos described before it. This Psalm is believed to have inspired Martin Luther's great hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," written in 1529.
