About this image
A powerful Renaissance-style depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, one of the most depicted saints in Western art. This devotional wallpaper shows the young Roman soldier tied to a wooden post, his body pierced by multiple arrows, yet his face turned heavenward with an expression of transcendent faith and devotion rather than suffering. Sebastian was a captain in the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian (3rd century AD) who secretly practiced Christianity and converted many soldiers and prisoners. When his faith was discovered, Diocletian ordered him executed by archers. Miraculously, Sebastian survived this ordeal — nursed back to health by Saint Irene of Rome — only to confront the emperor again and be beaten to death. He is the patron saint of athletes, soldiers, and those suffering from plague. His feast day is January 20th. Rendered in the classical chiaroscuro style reminiscent of Caravaggio and Guido Reni, this image captures the saint's extraordinary spiritual strength in the face of physical suffering.
