When his faith was discovered, Diocletian ordered him executed by archers. Miraculously, Sebastian survived this ordeal — nursed back to health by Saint Irene of Rome — only to confront the emperor again and be beaten to death. He is the patron saint of athletes, soldiers, and those suffering from plague. His feast day is January 20th.
