About this image
Happy Thursday Blessings! Count your blessings and name them one by one -- and this glorious autumn image shows you a cross ablaze in the golden light of sunrise, surrounded by falling maple leaves in every shade of amber, orange, and crimson. Thursday is the ideal day to count blessings. You are close enough to the end of the week to look back on what God has done, and the autumn light in this image tells you that even endings are beautiful when God designs them. The old hymn by Johnson Oatman Jr. -- "Count Your Blessings, Name Them One by One" (1897) -- was written as a therapeutic exercise in gratitude. When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost -- count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done. The exercise is specific and intentional: not "be generally grateful" but name them. One by one. The job that showed up. The health that held. The friendship that called at the right moment. The answer to the prayer you almost stopped praying. The cross in this image is where all blessings find their source. Ephesians 1:3 says: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." Every blessing -- every one -- flows from the cross. Autumn is the season of harvest and thanksgiving. Thursday is your weekly harvest moment.
