The Tirthankaras are the twenty-four great teachers of Jainism who have achieved perfect knowledge and liberation (moksha), serving as spiritual guides for others to follow. The first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva (Adinatha), is said to have lived millions of years ago, while the last, Mahavira, lived in the 6th century BCE. Each Tirthankara is associated with a specific symbol -- Rishabhadeva with the bull, Parshvanatha with the serpent hood, and Mahavira with the lion.
