About this image
The Transfiguration of Jesus -- recorded in Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9 -- is the moment when Jesus allowed three of his disciples to see his divine nature unveiled: his face shining like the sun, his clothes dazzling white, standing between Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets) on the mountain. This breathtaking HD wallpaper captures the scene in the tradition of Raphael's famous Transfiguration (1520), considered one of the greatest paintings in Western art: the supernatural radiance of the transfigured Christ set in dramatic contrast to the struggling figures of disciples and supplicants below. Jesus stands at the center of a blaze of divine light that cannot be contained -- the uncreated light of his divine nature momentarily visible through his human form. Moses and Elijah flank him in conversation, a visual statement that Jesus is the fulfillment and completion of both the Law and the Prophets. Below, the apostles Peter, James, and John are overwhelmed -- Peter characteristically wants to build shelters and stay; James and John shield their eyes. A voice from the cloud declares: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." The Eastern Orthodox Church considers the Transfiguration one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year (celebrated August 6), and its theology of "divine light" -- the uncreated Taboric light -- was the subject of the great 14th-century Hesychast controversy, in which Gregory Palamas defended the possibility of direct human experience of God's divine energies. Mount Tabor in Galilee, the traditional site, is crowned by the Church of the Transfiguration. Free HD download.
