The Annunciation -- one of the most depicted scenes in all of Christian art -- the moment when the Angel Gabriel appears to the young Virgin Mary to announce that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary sits with a book (representing her prayerful life), looking up at the luminous angel in a mixture of surprise, humility, and acceptance. Divine golden light streams into the humble room, and white lilies -- the traditional symbol of Mary's purity -- stand nearby in a vase. The gold and blue palette follows centuries of Marian artistic tradition. Mary's response -- "Let it be done to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38) -- is considered by Christians to be the most consequential act of human free will in history, the moment when God's plan of salvation hinged on the consent of a young woman.
