Gabriel's large white wings, flowing white and blue robes, and golden halo create an image of divine grace and purity. In Christian tradition, Gabriel is the angel who appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive and bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). He also appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist. The lily Gabriel carries symbolizes Mary's purity and has become one of the most recognized symbols in Christian art.
