About this image
In the vast silence between one creation and the next, the cosmos holds its breath -- and on the surface of the primordial ocean, a baby floats on a peepal leaf, sucking his toe with an expression of perfect, unbothered divine peace. This is Vata Patra Sayi (also Vatapatra Shai) -- the cosmic infant form of Lord Krishna, one of the most profound and beautiful images in all of Hindu iconography. The peepal leaf (Ficus religiosa, the sacred fig, also the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment) floats on the ocean of dissolution -- the pralaya that precedes each new creation. All the worlds, all the gods, all the universes, have been dissolved back into the primordial waters. Only this baby remains, holding the entire cosmos in his tiny body, quietly sucking his toe. The stars and galaxies visible in the water's reflection remind us that this is not an ordinary ocean but the infinite cosmic waters from which all existence emerges. The Bhagavata Purana narrates how the great sage Markandeya, wandering the cosmic ocean during one such dissolution, encountered the divine infant on the peepal leaf and was swallowed and then released -- experiencing the entire universe inside the infant's body before being expelled back into the outer cosmic ocean. This vision shattered all his categories of understanding. The peepal tree is sacred to both Vishnu (under the name Ashwattha) and to the Buddha -- it is the tree of enlightenment and eternal life. Baby Krishna on the peepal leaf is one of the most beloved images of Krishna devotion, combining cosmic scale with tender intimacy. Free HD download.
