Colored powder bursts through the air in the background, turning the festival scene into an explosion of orange and saffron that mirrors the energy and exuberance of the celebration. Dahi Handi is a celebration of the childhood mischief of Lord Krishna. As a young boy in Gokul and Vrindavan, Krishna was famous for His playful theft of butter and curd -- sneaking into the kitchens of the gopis (cowherd women), forming teams with His friends, climbing on each other's shoulders to reach the pots of butter hung high to keep them out of reach of the mischievous children. The gopis would scold Him, then laugh, then fall in love with Him all over again. Each year on Janmashtami, teams of young men called Govindas re-enact this divine mischief -- commemorating God in the act of playing. The tradition is most elaborate in Mumbai and across Maharashtra, where prizes for the first team to break the handi can reach into millions of rupees.
