About this image
Jai Mata Di! This breathtaking Navratri wallpaper depicts Goddess Durga in her most celebrated and powerful form -- Mahishasura Mardini, the Slayer of the Buffalo Demon -- at the supreme moment of cosmic victory. Mounted on her lion vahana (vehicle), her ten arms spread wide in a divine arc wielding the complete arsenal of divine weapons gifted to her by all the gods combined: Shiva's trident, Vishnu's discus (Sudarshana Chakra), Indra's thunderbolt (Vajra), Varuna's conch, Agni's bow, Vayu's arrow, Yama's sword and shield, Kubera's mace, and Brahma's lotus. Her expression combines fierce determination with divine compassion -- the paradox at the heart of Devi theology. Beneath her feet, the demon king Mahishasura lies defeated in his buffalo form. The story of Mahishasura Mardini is one of the foundational myths of Hindu tradition. Mahishasura was a demon king who, through severe austerities, had won a boon making him invincible to any man or god. He conquered the three worlds and drove the gods from heaven. Unable to defeat him, the gods pooled their divine energies (shakti) to create a supreme feminine power -- the goddess Durga emerged from this collective energy like a solar nova, combining all their powers into a single indomitable force. Their eighteen-day battle ended when Durga pierced Mahishasura with her trident. This victory is what Navratri celebrates. The Devi Mahatmyam (also called Chandi Path or Durga Saptashati), composed around 400-600 CE, narrates this story in 700 Sanskrit verses and is recited in full during Navratri.
