Eid al-Adha -- the Festival of Sacrifice -- is the second of the two great Eid celebrations in the Islamic calendar and is considered by many to be the holiest. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) in obedience to God's command -- and God's mercy in providing a ram as a substitute at the last moment. This act of total surrender to God's will is the heart of Islam itself; the word "Islam" means submission, and Eid al-Adha celebrates the ultimate act of submission. The festival coincides with the climax of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, when millions of Muslims from around the world gather at the sacred sites. Families who are not on Hajj celebrate at home by performing the qurbani (animal sacrifice), distributing the meat to family, neighbors, and those in need.
