About this image
Four traditional Ramadan fanous lanterns hang in a row against a deep dark blue starry night sky -- their ornate gold and emerald green metalwork glowing with warm candlelight from within, a crescent moon visible through the spaces between them, and a distant mosque silhouette sitting on the horizon. Golden dust particles float in the air around the lanterns, and subtle Islamic geometric patterns are visible in the dark background. This is one of the most beloved images of Ramadan -- the fanous (or fanoos) lantern is the symbol of the holy month across the Arab world and Muslim diaspora. The tradition of hanging lanterns during Ramadan is said to date back centuries in Egypt, where children would carry fanous lanterns through the streets singing Ramadan songs as the month began. Today the fanous is recognized worldwide as the icon of Ramadan, its warm light representing the spiritual illumination of the holy month. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the month in which the Holy Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Jibril. Muslims observe it through fasting (sawm), intensified prayer, recitation of Quran, and increased charitable giving (zakat and sadaqah). The nights of Ramadan -- particularly the last ten nights and especially Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) -- are the most spiritually charged nights in the Islamic year. This Ramadan lantern wallpaper captures that sacred atmosphere beautifully. Free HD download.
