Hartalika Teej is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, celebrated on the third day of the bright half of the month Bhadrapada. Married and unmarried women observe a strict nirjala (waterless) fast, praying for marital bliss or a good husband. The festival is particularly grand in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Women dress in green attire, apply mehndi (henna), and gather to sing traditional songs and swing on decorated jhulas (swings). Clay idols of Shiva and Parvati are made, worshipped through the night, and immersed the next morning. In Rajasthan, colorful processions featuring decorated palanquins with Parvati idols move through city streets. The legend recounts how Parvati performed severe penance to win Shiva as her husband, and her friend (hartalika means one who abducts) hid her in a forest to prevent her marriage to Vishnu arranged by her father.
