About this image
One of the most emotionally powerful scenes in all of Hindu mythology -- Lord Shiva wandering through the cosmos carrying the lifeless body of his beloved wife Sati after her self-immolation at her father Daksha's yajna. His hair disheveled in grief, tears on his face, the cosmic Tandava of sorrow causing destruction across the three worlds as the universe reels at the pain of its lord. This story from the Shiva Purana captures the extraordinary emotional depth of the Shiva-Parvati mythology. Sati, the daughter of Daksha, had married Shiva against her father's wishes. When Daksha held a great sacrifice and deliberately excluded Shiva, Sati attended in his defense and, unable to bear her father's insults of her husband, immolated herself in the sacred fire. Shiva's grief at losing Sati was so profound that his wandering threatened the stability of the universe -- until Lord Vishnu intervened, using his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati's body as Shiva carried it, causing it to fall in fifty-one pieces across the subcontinent. These places became the Shakti Peethas, the most sacred goddess temples in India. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
