Karva Chauth is a one-day festival where married Hindu women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. Celebrated mainly in North India in October-November, women dress in their wedding finery, apply mehndi, and break their fast after sighting the moon through a sieve and then looking at their husband. The festival has roots in the story of Queen Veervati and is widely popular in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and UP.
