Makar Sankranti marks the sun's transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) on January 14. It is celebrated across India by different names -- Uttarayan in Gujarat (kite festival), Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab, Bihu in Assam, and Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Traditional foods include til-gul (sesame and jaggery sweets), khichdi, and pongal rice. It is one of the few Hindu festivals based on the solar calendar.
