Muharram marks the first month of the Islamic calendar and is observed as a period of mourning, particularly for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The tenth day, Ashura, is the most significant. In India, Muharram is observed across all states with Shia Muslim communities leading the commemorations. Elaborate tazias (replicas of Imam Hussein tomb) are carried in processions through city streets, accompanied by chest-beating (matam), recitation of marsiya (elegiac poems), and chanting. In Lucknow, the Muharram processions are world-famous, passing through the old city with historical tazias some dating back centuries. Hyderabad Bibi Ka Alawa and Mumbai processions are equally grand. Interestingly, many Hindus also participate in Muharram processions in rural India, reflecting the syncretic cultural fabric. In some regions, special food like haleem is prepared and distributed. The observance varies from solemn mourning among Shia communities to fasting on Ashura among Sunni Muslims. It is a national restricted holiday.
