Sama Chakeva is a unique festival celebrated exclusively in the Mithila region of Bihar and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh during the month of Kartik (October-November). It celebrates the brother-sister bond through the story of Sama (daughter of Lord Krishna) and her brother Chakeva (Samba). The festival involves creating beautiful clay figurines of birds (especially the Sama bird), Chakeva, Churika (the villain), and other characters, decorated with natural colors in the distinctive Madhubani art style. For about two weeks, girls worship these figurines every evening, singing traditional Maithili songs narrating the tale. On the final day, the figurines are immersed in water while brothers carry them on their heads. The festival is unique in its combination of folk art, storytelling, and sibling devotion. The clay figurines, painted in the Mithila style with intricate geometric patterns and natural pigments, are now recognized as a distinct folk art form. Sama Chakeva preserves the rich cultural heritage of the Maithil Brahmin community and the broader Mithila region.
