Shab-e-Barat, meaning the Night of Fortune, is observed on the 15th night of the Islamic month of Shaban, approximately two weeks before Ramadan begins. Muslims believe that on this night, God determines the destiny of all people for the coming year, and that prayers and repentance can alter one fate. The night is spent in prayer, recitation of the Quran, and seeking forgiveness. In India, mosques across the country hold special night-long prayer sessions. Homes and mosques are illuminated with lights and candles. In Hyderabad, the celebrations are particularly grand, with fireworks (though authorities discourage them) and visits to cemeteries to pray for deceased relatives. Halwa and other sweets are prepared and distributed to neighbors and the poor. In Kashmir, children go house to house collecting sweets in a tradition similar to trick-or-treating. In Kolkata, the Park Circus and Rajabazar areas witness large gatherings. The observance is widespread among Barelvi and Sufi-influenced Muslim communities in India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Telangana, and Karnataka.
