Teej is a monsoon festival celebrated by women across Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The most prominent celebration is Hariyali Teej, falling on the third day of Shravana, and Kajari Teej in Bhadrapada. The festival celebrates the reunion of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva after her long penance. Women wear green clothes symbolizing the lush monsoon vegetation, apply mehndi, wear glass bangles, and swing on flower-decorated jhulas (swings). Married women receive gifts (sindhara) from their parents including clothes, bangles, and sweets. In Jaipur, a magnificent Teej procession carries a decorated idol of Goddess Parvati through the walled city streets on a palanquin, accompanied by elephants, camels, dancers, and musicians. Women observe fasting and perform puja for marital happiness and the well-being of their husbands. The festival marks the arrival of the monsoon and is a celebration of renewal, nature, and feminine joy, bringing women together in song and dance.
