The Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan is the largest Muslim pilgrimage event in India, held annually for six days starting from the 1st to the 6th of Rajab in the Islamic calendar. Millions of devotees from all faiths visit the shrine of the 12th-century Sufi saint, who is known as Gharib Nawaz (benefactor of the poor). The Urs commemorates his death anniversary, which in Sufi tradition is considered the union of the saint with the divine. The celebrations include qawwali performances in the dargah courtyard (a tradition made famous globally by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), distribution of langar (community meals), and the offering of chadar (sacred cloth) and flowers at the tomb. A massive deg (cauldron) of rice and meat is cooked and distributed as tabarruk (blessed food). People of all religions, castes, and backgrounds visit Ajmer Sharif, making it one of the most powerful symbols of India syncretic spiritual tradition. The dargah attracts pilgrims from across India, particularly from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi.
