Vat Savitri, also known as Vat Purnima, is a Hindu festival where married women fast and pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The festival commemorates the devotion of Savitri, who won back her husband Satyavan from Yama, the god of death, through her unwavering determination and wisdom. Women tie threads around a banyan (vat) tree and circumambulate it, as Savitri followed Yama under a banyan tree. The festival is observed on different dates in different regions: on the full moon of Jyeshtha in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, and on the new moon of Jyeshtha in North India (where it is known as Vat Savitri Amavasya). The banyan tree is revered as a symbol of immortality because its aerial roots allow it to grow indefinitely. Women dressed in their wedding attire offer fruits, flowers, and sweets at the base of the tree while reciting the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
